Goofy Foot was established in Lahaina, Maui in April, 1994 by the Owner/Instructor Tim Sherer to perpetuate his relationship with Mother Ocean and to teach the ancient Hawaiian sport of surfing.
Our SUP lessons take place in Lahaina in our beautiful reef protected lagoon graced with a lot of marine life. Turtle sightings are common as are Hawaiian Monk seals in their natural habitat. Monk seals are on the endangered species list.
Learn the basic fundamentals of standup paddling along with condition assessment, ocean awareness, risk management, and even self-rescue techniques. Do this while enjoying the beauty of viewing the island from off shore and exploring the underwater reef environment.
Kids 9 years and under are required to take a private lesson on their own or a semi-private with their family/friends.

I stood up!

I rented a board off them one day and I was more than useless, so booked a group lesson with them.
I actually stood every time with much help from the instructor, who basically got behind the board and gave it a huge shove into the wave, shouting at me when to stand up!
Each round he told me what I was doing wrong and how to correct it, which really helped my technique and built my confidence.
To be honest, I’d have preferred to be in a smaller group, as I was the middle aged woman in a group with teenagers, which wasn’t very comfortable. However, I noticed later that day that the school had messaged me 1st thing offering to do an earlier lesson with less people and better surf, so my bad I hadn’t seen the text.

It was my second time surfing on Hawaii. My surf instructor Joe did a very good job! By the end of the lesson I was able to stand! As I was the only one who signed up for a group lesson, I actually got a private lesson for the price of a group lesson, which was super nice! I had a really great time and would definitely recommend this surf school to anyone! Very welcoming atmosphere!
Good tips and tricks to have fun and staying safe

I had taken a mini group lesson before coming to Hawaii. I had only paddleboarded 3 times but had never stood up. We had so much fun and learned so much from Arma and Cristin. If you are serious about getting a good lesson and not a tour you will not go wrong with Goofy Foot. Everyone in our party of 4 had a great time. They answered our concerns and didn't sugarcoat anything. They made it fun, relaxing and safe all at the same time. Thanks for upping our game.

I signed up for a group lesson and when I arrived I was the only one in the class. I went out with the instructor and caught multiple waves. The instructor was great and guided me through the whole lesson. Would highly recommend a private lesson after this experience.

Keith was a great guide. His instructions were clear and easy. Reasonably priced and location was easy to find with plenty of available parking within walking distance. Keith was clear with where we should SUP and where to avoid. We saw several turtles and he was chatty and easy going! He gave us recommendations for local snorkeling for beginners and a good place for lunch. Would highly recommend and will return next time we’re in Maui!

Joe was our teacher and he was fabulous. We had taken a lesson before on Oahu and the teacher was not half as good as Joe.

Our whole family (husband, myself and kids aged 21, 19 and 16) took a SUP lesson from Joe. Everyone loved Joe and he did a great job of breaking down all of the parts of SUP and getting us up to speed on the basic skills before taking us out. We've never done SUP and I wasn't sure we needed a lesson (it just doesn't look that hard and we are pretty athletic and have done similar looking sports), but I am so glad we decided to do it. I'd feel confident now taking out a SUP board on my own and be able to navigate out of any situation.
In addition to teaching us SUP, Joe was super knowledgable about both Hawaii (history, etc) and the ocean. He taught us about reading waves and the tides, information that will come in handy on future trips to the ocean!
